Part physics lesson, part voyage toward destruction, the starry universe/video installation Oldham presents How to Escape a Black Hole (2017) is immersive and stimulating. As a giant floating head guiding viewers on a meditative journey into an all-encompassing black hole, Oldham replicates YouTube tropes of self-hypnosis and ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) videos that fabricate soothing soundscapes for their listeners.
This 4-channel, fully immersive video installation was first commissioned for a dedicated 4-wall projection gallery in Portland, OR called Gray Box and has since been exhibited in various configurations, including exhibitions at BRIC in Brooklyn, NY and the Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland, OR.
